Officer shot in foot at Birmingham nightclub

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - According to Sgt. Mauldin with the Birmingham Police Department, an off-duty officer was shot in the foot at a nightclub early Saturday morning.

Police said the off-duty officer arrived at The Quest Club, at 416 24th Street South, for his security shift when he was alerted by staff that someone had a firearm on the patio.

The wounded officer has been identified as 28-year-old Officer Darius Gamble. Officer Gamble is assigned to the Patrol Division. Gamble joined the Birmingham Police Department in October, 2017. Officer Gamble has been released from the hospital and is recovering.

Investigators said the officer made contact with the suspect around 3:00 a.m.

Officers said Gamble was approached by club management and alerted of a person armed with a gun inside of the establishment. Gamble made contact with the suspect and during their interaction a struggle ensued. The suspect’s weapon was discharged, and Officer Gamble and the suspect were wounded by gunfire.

The officer was able to subdue the suspect. Officer Gamble and the suspect were taken to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect has been identified as Robert William Lee, 27, Pleasant Grove.

Lee was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault 2nd on Police Officer and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree. Lee will be held in the Jefferson County Jail with a $31,000 bond.
